Pelican Harbour indeed: Pelecanus conspicillatus. In 1802-3, the great lagoon on the eastern part of Kangaroo Island was teeming with pelicans, so much so that explorers Flinders and Baudin called the area "Pelican Lagoon" and "Port des Pélicans" (the latter was renamed "American River" at the beginning of 1804 by US hunters who had completely wiped out the local population of fur-seals -- a double misnomer, with a sinister memory, but which has stuck). Later, fishermen exterminated most of the Lagoon's pelicans, but they can still be seen majestically gliding high in the sky.

Ils sont nombreux ici, et l'étaient encore plus dans le passé: ce n'est pas pour rien qu'en 1802-3 les explorateurs Flinders et Baudin avaient nommé les lieux "Pelican Lagoon" et "Port des Pélicans" (ce dernier lieu fut renommé "American River" au début de 1804 par des chasseurs de fourrure US qui venaient d'exterminer complètement la population locale d'otaries à fourrure... un nom doublement absurde et lourd à porter, mais qui est resté...). Par la suite, les pêcheurs exterminèrent la plupart des pélicans de la lagune, mais on peut encore en voir planer majestueusement dans le ciel.
